Most of the people were dependent on charity that was sent to them. It was called “distribution” because it was distributed, though not equally, among the members of the communities. The Jews of the Old Yishuv saw themselves as worthy of this money since they were living in the Land of Israel, studying Torah and praying for the well-being of the entire Jewish nation. They believed that by doing so they were hastening the coming of the Messiah. In the middle of the 19th century, there were changes and new initiatives in the Old Yishuv. Money was distributed differently and there was a shift from traditional forms of charity towards efforts of “self-help” and productivity. Other changes included moving out of the Old City of Jerusalem to new neighborhoods and opening of schools, such as Alliance.

A prominent figure in this area was Sir Moshe Montefiore. The Yemenite Aliyah comprised 2500 people.

The Mass immigration

1870-1914

This was a demographic phenomenon in which more than 35 million people emigrated from Eastern Europe westward, to Western Europe and lands across the sea. The population of Europe doubled in 100 years. On the eve of World War I the population of Russia was approximately 171 million. The Jewish population of Czarist Russia grew by 500% in this period and by the close of the 19th century comprised more than 5 million people. This natural population growth created serious economic problems as countries were unable to absorb so many more people. It resulted in extreme poverty and forced masses of people to migrate to other countries in search of means to support themselves.
In addition to the economic and demographic situation, the pogroms which took place at the end of the 19th century (with the encouragement of the Russian government which wanted to place the blame for the economic and social difficulties on the Jews) caused the Jews to understand that they could not find their place and be integrated into the Russian society. The desperation made them seek a new future in other lands, in liberal and democratic western countries.

<style
