Jewish students in Kharkov founded the organization in 1882. Their aim was to establish in the Land of Israel a Jewish society based on justice and social equality in which the culture and the language were Hebrew. The members of Bil&#8217;u were flag-bearers of Zionism in their devotion, perseverance, enthusiasm and in their social vision. <\/p>\n<span class=\"fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-1 hover-type-none\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zionism.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/bilu.jpg\" width=\"728\" height=\"501\" alt=\"\" title=\"bilu\" class=\"img-responsive wp-image-11963\"\/><\/span>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\nIn June, 1882, Israel Belkind led a group of 14 Bilu&#8217;im who made &#8220;aliyah&#8221;, marking the start of the First Aliyah. At first, they worked in agriculture at the Mikve Israel school. They lived in a rented house in the middle of a grove in Jaffa. The school was founded as part of the French \u00a0&#8220;Alliance Isra\u00e9lite Universelle&#8221;. The Turkish government gave Netter a license to establish an agricultural school and leased him 2,600 dunams of state land for 99 years. Although the school did not thrive in its early years, the arrival of the Bilu&#8217;im brought about a change. By the time they established the Gedera Moshava, they were ready for a career in agriculture. In 1894, the number of students at Mikve Israel rose to nearly 100 and agriculture developed.
