There were several reasons for the increase in the number of Ethiopian immigrants. In 1973, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef ruled that the Ethiopian Jews were Jewish. At the same time, relations with the Ethiopian Jewish community were strengthened. Ethiopia was also undergoing internal developments, such as migration to urban centers, together with attacks on Jews. These factors raised the fear that the Jewish community in Ethiopia was in danger. By 1984, 7,000 Ethiopian Jews came to Israel. In 1984, Israel conducted “Operation Moshe (Moses)” in which another 7,000 Ethiopian Jews came to Israel and “Operation Malkat Sheva ( Queen of Sheba)” in which 12,000 more made aliyah. Fear of being caught by the authorities or by thieves was their constant companion. The Israeli government made great efforts to convince the Sudanese ruler, Gaafar Nimeiry to allow the Ethiopian Jews that reached Sudan to continue to Israel. At first, the Jews were flown to Kenya and from there to Israel. In the second stage, the Jews were brought to a Sudanese shore that was readied for the mission, and from there they were taken to small waiting boats, which took them to Israeli navy boats that awaited them in the Red Sea. This method brought, 2000 Ethiopians to Israel in 1981. In 1984, 10,000 people were living in camps in Sudan, and the operation to save them went on for months. Towards the end of November, an extensive secret operation to bring the immigrants by plane was carried out – “Operation Moshe”. However, in reality, the absorption centers became the permanent homes of the Ethiopians, slums, which the Israeli government did not succeed in disbanding. Givat HaMatos is an example. Another example of the absorption problems facing the Ethiopians can be seen in the issue of blood donations. In 1996, it became known that the Blood Bank was throwing out the blood donated by Ethiopians, without testing because of fear of the fear of the AIDS virus. This exposure infuriated the Ethiopian community, who felt discriminated against, and set out to fight it. In response, they held stormy demonstrations opposite the prime minister’s office which turned violent. 61 people (41 police officers) were injured in the demonstrations.
Over the years, facing great difficulties, the Ethiopian community succeeded in excelling in many areas: in the army, in industry, at universities, yeshivas and other educational institutions and in the field of culture. The site was dedicated in 2007. Approximately 4,000 Ethiopian Jews who were trying to come to Israel via Sudan dies on the journey – from hunger, disease and criminal attacks – or they were kidnapped and they have never been found. The main cause of death was the terrible sanitary conditions in the refugee camps Um Rakuba and Gedarif which led to the outbreak of deathly epidemics in late 1983.
The memorial site is an open sunken grass-covered courtyard surrounded by trees and bushes, According to the architect who designed the site, the sunken structure is meant to create a feeling of ascending, aliyah, to a holy site. There one can also find a small room where one can read the stories of individuals, structures representing the roofs of tukuls –the traditional houses of Ethiopian villages, concrete wedges jutting out from the grass, which symbolize the cliffs and the obstacles the Ethiopians faced on their journey and a kind of tombstones to those who died without reaching Israel. An official memorial service for the Ethiopian Jews who died en route to Israel is held at the site every year on Jerusalem Day. That date was chosen to express the hope of the immigrants to reach Jerusalem.

Operation Shlomo

At the beginning of 1990, the Civil War in Ethiopia intensified and the situation of thousands of Ethiopian Jews worsened. The US government applied heavy pressure on the Ethiopian government to allow the Jews to immigrate to Israel and at the same time conducted diplomatic talks with rebel leaders. After paying $40 million, and the agreement of all the sides the operation began. The operation lasted for more than one day, during which 36 planes landed at the Addis Ababa airport, bringing to Israel 14,499 Jews. More than 35,000 Ethiopian Jews succeeded in coming to Israel. The kessim, the religious leaders would take out the “Orit” (a translation of the Torah, like Orita in Aramit) and the members of the community would accompany them in song. That is how they would ascend the mountain until they reached the place where the service was held. Once they got there, the kessim – the leaders of the community – would begin the prayers and readings. First, they prayed for Jerusalem and their hope to someday pray there. Then, the chief kess would speak to the people, emphasizing the importance of following the laws of the Torah. At the end, they would read from the Orit: from the story of Mount Sinai, from Nehemiah, a renewal of the contract, the brit, between the Jewish people and God, from Leviticus, Chapter 26 and from Deuteronomy, Chapters 27-28. Then all the congregants would confess to their sins, kneeling and bowing with arms extended, facing upward. The ceremony would end with the blowing of horns and expressing the desire to celebrate the next year in Jerusalem. At the end of the day, they would descend from the mountain singing and dancing. They would then return to their village where a festive meal would be eaten, closing the day.

The Sigd in Israel is observed in two places: on the Armon Hanatziv Promenade in Jerusalem and at the Western Wall Plaza. The participants in the Sigd holiday usually wear white clothes. The kessim stand out because of the brightly colored parasols they carry.

On June 30, 2008, the Sigd holiday was recognized by the Knesset. The significance of the recognition is that the holiday is not only an Ethiopian holiday, but it is also part of Israel’s official calendar. Every year, there will be an official ceremony to commemorate the holiday and it will be taught in school.
